Energy & Utilities

Industry Overview

The energy industry is the third largest industry in the United States. U.S. energy companies produce oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear power, renewable energy and fuels, as well as electricity, smart grid, and demand response technologies. The utilities industry is broken down into four supplier segments, and those are: generators who create electrical power; energy network operators who are grid operators, regional network operators and distribution network operators; energy traders and marketers that help utilities and businesses to secure a dependable supply of electricity at a stable price; and energy service providers and retailers, third parties in the utilities market that buy power at competitive prices from transmission operators and energy traders and then sell it to users.
